The World's Two Best Scientific Institutes Call Palm Beach County Home

| 5/17/2019

JUPITER, FL – Nature Index has ranked Max Planck Society and Scripps Research as the world’s top two stand-alone scientific institutes for biomedical research. In fact, Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter, Florida campus is the only place on the planet where two quality research institutions are co-located. Nature Index, the definitive ranking source for research institutions, based these results on high impact papers and yearly growth over the past five years.  Along with Florida Atlantic University, a Nikon Center of Excellence, these three institutions form an unparalleled research campus for biomedical research.

“The biomedical sciences have helped global average life expectancy rise by 20 years since 1960. This supplement highlights scientists and institutions prominent in the ongoing research effort that will further transform our ideals of a healthy human life in the coming decades,” stated Nature Index 2019 Biomedical Sciences.

For over 20 years, the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County (BDB) has focused on supporting growth of the Life Sciences in Palm Beach County.  In 2004, the State of Florida, Palm Beach County, and Town of Jupiter began to make the investments necessary to bring Scripps, Max Planck, and FAU’s life sciences research to Jupiter.  Since then, a vibrant life sciences community evolved in Palm Beach County to include over 700 companies primarily engaged in R&D or manufacture of biotechnologies, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or in the environmental and biological sciences.

Just within the past year, the BDB has assisted five life sciences companies with a relocation to or an expansion in Jupiter including Algafeed, Alphazyme, Cytonics, Detraxi, Expansion Therapeutics, and a new life science accelerator, Beacon Pharmaceutical. Including other BDB life sciences projects such as CSL Plasma and Gift of Life expanding in Boca Raton and Capzer Pharmaceuticals expanding in Lake Worth Beach, all of these companies will result in over 330 jobs, occupy over 250,000 sq.ft. of space, and invest over $100 million into the local economy.

“The Palm Beach County Life Sciences Cluster is internationally recognized in areas of biomedical science, combinatorial chemistry, medical devices, microscopy, and neuroscience.  The exceptional education programs and world-class core facilities in our cluster, in addition to the affordable cost of living and enjoyable lifestyle, are proving to be a huge draw for early-stage life science companies,” said Robert Mino, Vice President of Life Sciences at the Business Development Board.

“Since 2006, when Scripps decided to locate in Jupiter, we have supported this industry through our bioscience investment fund, setting aside $3 million for loan guarantees that have supported 15 biotech companies to-date,” said Todd Wodraska, Mayor of the Town of Jupiter.

About the BDB: The Business Development Board of Palm Beach County is the official public/private economic development organization for Palm Beach County and Enterprise Florida.  Founded in 1982 as a not-for-profit corporation, our primary purpose is to attract and retain new industry, business investment, high quality jobs and workforce development through corporate relocations, expansions and international trade. During the past five years, the BDB has assisted companies that have created more than 12,822 direct jobs with average salaries greater than $69,062, resulting in more than $777 million in capital investment to Palm Beach County and an economic impact that exceeds $6.87 billion.  Additional information can be found at the BDB’s web site, BDB.org.

About the Town of Jupiter: Jupiter, Florida is located in the northeast corner of Palm Beach County, between Miami and Orlando. A coastal community that celebrates its history and heritage, Jupiter maintains a small-town feel and sense of community that is unique in South Florida. By keeping a watchful eye on development and managing growth, Jupiter has successfully avoided many of the challenges facing South Florida communities today. Residential and economic growth – such as that fueled by the life sciences industry – provides new opportunities that are a good match for Jupiter’s character and sense of place.
