Amid heated governor's race, Ron DeSantis resigns from Congress

Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis announced Monday that he’s immediately resigning from Congress to focus on his campaign for governor of Florida, less than two months before Election Day. DeSantis, 39, informed Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., about his decision in a letter to his office Monday and is resigning from the House effective immediately. "As the Republican nominee for Governor of Florida, it is clear to me that I will likely miss the vast majority of our remaining session days for this Congress. Under these circumstances, it would be inappropriate for me to accept a salary," DeSantis said in the letter. More from NBC News.

Judy Genshaft to step down as president of USF after leading school to preeminence

Judy Genshaft, the powerful academic leader who propelled the University of South Florida into national prominence, will announce her retirement later today. On Monday morning, the university published a letter from Genshaft to the university community in which she thanked it for its support and friendship. She plans to step down as president on July 1, 2019, after holding the position since 2000. More from Florida Trend and Florida Politics.

PortMiami gets $3.9m grant for cruise terminal improvements

The Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development Council announced a commitment of $3.9m in grant funding for cruise terminal improvements and $108,075 for security at PortMiami. The FSTED Program, crafted to finance port transportation projects on a 50-50 matching basis, creates a partnership between the state and its seaports. More from Seatrade Cruise News.

The company is a next generation manufacturer and developer of manned, unmanned aircraft and sea systems worldwide with offices in Central America, South America and the United States. Skyborne said it chose the area specifically to have access to employ manned and unmanned aircraft pilots, skilled manufacturing labor for composites, aircraft aluminum and high bulletproof fabrics. Florida gas prices drop despite impending Hurricane Florence

Gas prices are usually one of the first things to be affected when a named storm threatens the U.S., but Hurricane Florence hasn’t touched the Sunshine State’s fuel prices — yet. Unleaded gas was selling at $2.76 per gallon on average statewide Monday, down over the week from $2.80 per gallon. More from the Tampa Bay Times.

floridaJacksonville-based Fanatics, the sports apparel and memorabilia company, and the NFL are going north of the border to Canada. Fanatics officials and the NFL announced last week they launched a Canadian-based e-commerce operation called NFLShop.ca.
