Florida unemployment rate hits 7-year low with spurt in job creation

Florida's unemployment rate fell to a seven-year low of 5.1 percent in October as the state added a robust 35,200 jobs over the month, state officials said Friday. Gov. Rick Scott, who discounts the ebb and flow in government jobs, focused on the spurt in private sector jobs. Read more at Florida Trend and the Tampa Bay Times.

Florida Biologix spins off from University of Florida

Florida Biologix, a contract development and manufacturing organization focused on complex biological products, has been spun off from the University of Florida to FB2 Services Inc., a newly formed entity that will continue to operate as Florida Biologix. More at Florida Trend.

USF to add College of Science & Mathematics

The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee will establish a new College of Science & Mathematics and combine its existing College of Arts & Sciences and College of Education, officials will announce today. More at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Families still await medical marijuana

As desperately ill Floridians await treatment, the state has yet to license medical marijuana under a law approved by the Legislature 18 months ago. State officials were expected to select five companies last month to start growing the plant, but the process of reviewing 24 applications is continuing. More at the Orlando Sentinel.

Chinese-restaurant food fight that started in Miami sizzles to a legal end

A six-year food fight that started between two high-end Chinese restaurants in Miami Beach has ended flatter than a scallion pancake. A federal appeals court this week ordered restaurant Mr Chow to fork over $1 million in attorney fees and costs to rival restaurant group Philippe Chow. More at the Miami Herald.
