Manufacturing increases for first time in three months

U.S. manufacturing output rose in October for the first time in three months as factories cranked out more steel, cars and computers. The rise suggests that manufacturers may be overcoming several headwinds they have faced for most of this year. More from the AP and Marketwatch.

Cargo increases at South Florida ports

South Florida two biggest seaports mostly enjoyed smooth sailing in the just-ended budget year. Port Everglades topped its record in trade but saw shortfalls in the cruise segment, while PortMiami hit new highs in cargo and cruises. More at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Florida leads country in homeowners eligible for HARP refinancing

Florida leads the nation in the number of homeowners eligible to refinance under a popular federal program. The program is aimed at helping those who have so little equity in their homes that it can be difficult to find a lender willing to refinance. More at the Tampa Bay Times.

Brevard schools struggle to hire teachers as many retire

The number of unfilled teaching positions in Brevard has become a pressing issue for school officials. For the first time in over a decade, Brevard County is having a hard time filling teaching positions. More at Florida Today.

Gov. Scott asks Congress for help to stop Syrian refugees

In the wake of the Paris attacks, Florida Gov. Rick Scott is asking Congress to stop the Obama administration from relocating thousands of Syrian refugees to Florida and other states until a complete vetting of them has been conducted. Scott has joined at least 23 other governors in making it clear he doesn't want the refugees in his state following concerns that at least one of the attackers in Friday's terrorist assault in Paris had a Syrian passport.
