Florida House declares sudden end to regular session

After weeks of impasse over the state budget and Medicaid expansion, the Florida House unilaterally ended the annual legislative session on Tuesday, three days earlier than scheduled, saying the differences with the Senate were impossible to resolve. House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island, said the House will return when the Senate was ready to negotiate their budget differences but, quoting Senate budget chief Tom Lee, "There's no possible hope for getting done at this time." Everglades study find pythons everywhere, eating everything

For five years, scientists tracked the 19 Burmese pythons around the Everglades, following their radio and GPS signals. They were hoping to learn where the invasive snakes prefer to live. The answer is: pretty much everywhere. More at the Tampa Bay Times, the Miami Herald, and the AP.

South Florida among leaders in rising home prices

An index measuring prices in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties rose 9.2 percent in February compared with a year ago. Only Denver (10 percent) and San Francisco (9.8) posted higher gains in the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index. More at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

cameras Investors in the U.S. are less likely to invest in mutual funds that have managers with foreign-sounding names, according to a new study from the University of Miami School of Business Administration. The study, forthcoming in The Review of Financial Studies, found that annual fund flows were 10% lower for funds managed by someone with a more familiar American name, an annual loss of approximately $133,000 per $195 million under management. » Full story
