Celebrity Neighborhood: The Island

Palm Beach is home, seasonally or year-round, to 28 people on the Forbes 400. No. 4 on the Forbes list is No. 1 on Palm Beach — David Koch at $42.9 billion. His fellow Forbes 400 member and brother, Bill, is the one to actually have his company, Oxbow Carbon, headquartered locally. Bill Koch also bankrolled the start of a local private school, Oxbridge Academy. Forbes 400 member Henry Kravis' name adorns the local performing arts center. Robert Kraft, familiar to many as the New England Patriots owner, has a house on Palm Beach. Dolphins Owner and New York-based real estate developer Stephen Ross, developer of CityPlace in West Palm Beach, also lives on the island. Donald Trump, who has a home on the island, has his fingers all over south Florida real estate. He saved Trump Mar-A-Lago, the 126-room, 20-acre estate built by socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, Edward F. Hutton. After renovating it, Trump turned it into a private club. Trump has leased his name to several developments and also owns the Doral resort.

Celebrity Neighborhood: Indian Creek Village

Thanks to satellite photography and the internet, it's easy to get a bird's-eye view of Indian Creek Village, a tiny community jutting into Biscayne Bay. It's the only view you'll get easily. The 294-acre island of the super-rich is protected by a security detail and even has its own 24-hour marine patrol. Indian Creek only has about 40 lots, all waterfront, with a golf course in the middle of the island. It dates to the 1930s and served as a place for wealthy vacation homes until in recent years the super-rich began knocking them down to build year-round palaces. The Miami Herald reported last year that the community's 86 residents have a net worth around $37 billion, though $20.3 billion of it comes from Carl Icahn alone. Other owners include Don Shula, singer Julio Iglesias, car dealer Norman Braman, basketball coach Rick Pitino and investor Edward Lampert, whose $38.4-million home purchase set a Miami-Dade record until surpassed by an unidentified Russian who paid $47 million in 2012 for a 13-bedroom house. Local legend homeowners include real estate investors Jackie Soffer and brother Jeffrey, who is married to supermodel Elle MacPherson. Beyonce and Jay-Z used to live on Indian Creek. Jill Eber, half of the top-end real estate team of "The Jills," says an empty lot on the island is under contract for $26 million and another home is on the market for $19.8 million. Properties priced in the tens of millions are not unusual for her and colleague Jill Hertzberg. They have a house on Miami Beach for sale for $37 million, Eber says. "We are seeing a lot of the international buyers, but the Americans are really driving the market now. There are a lot of hedge fund people and CEOs."

Celebrity Spotting: Miami Beach

Lots of restaurants host celebrities. Just a few, including Joe's Stone Crab, become celebrities in their own right.

Hungarian immigrant Joe Weiss and his wife, Jennie, in 1913 started what became Joe's Stone Crab two years before the founding of the City of Miami Beach. (Only the Columbia in Ybor City is older in Florida.)

Joe's is known for its signature stone crab claws. It's also known to be second nationally to Las Vegas's Tao Asian Bistro in annual revenue, at $35.3 million, according to Restaurant Business magazine. Many of the restaurant's wellpaid, tux-clad waiters have been there for decades.

Joe's is also very well known for its famous guests. Historical figures include J. Edgar Hoover, Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, Coretta Scott King and every president since Eisenhower, though Barack Obama only did delivery. Damon Runyon ate there, as have Madonna, Billy Joel, Sean Connery, Jennifer Lopez, Frank Sinatra, Muhammad Ali, Princess Caroline, Jimmy Buffett, author Dan Brown, Michael Douglas, Billy Crystal, Val Kilmer and Martha Stewart.

"My first celebrity was Jackie Gleason," says general manager Brian Johnson, who started at Joe's in 1980. The restaurant was in the movie The Mean Season and appeared under a pseudonym in Ian Fleming's Goldfinger.

Now owned by the fourth generation of the Weiss family and run by Steve Sawitz, the great-grandson of Joe and Jennie Weiss, the 400-employee restaurant has an online store, and the brand has expanded to Chicago, Washington and Las Vegas. The take away "window" has tables and a wine bar.

He then joined the NBA, becoming a four-time All-Star with the Chicago Bulls and a two-time All-Star with the San Antonio Spurs. He's now a special assistant to the president at Jacksonville University.

Most of the area's famous residents are golfers and tennis players, befitting a region that is home to the headquarters of both the PGA Tour and the ATP Tour. In fact, 19 of the 25 most expensive homes in the fourcounty area around Jacksonville are in Ponte Vedra Beach, according to MansionQuest.com, a real estate website produced by Winter Park-based Potomoc Land Co.
