Florida economists drawing up new budget forecast
State economists are drawing up new forecasts to predict how much the state will collect in taxes. The forecasts will be used by state legislators as they draw up this year's budget. More at the AP.
Winter tourism season booms in Cuba
Foreign visitors are coming to Cuba in droves this winter season. International visitors were up by 16 percent in January to a record 371,160 compared to the previous year, according to figures from Cuba’s Office of National Statistics and Information. More at the Miami Herald.
Latitude 360 to expand into Middle East
Latitude 360 has signed a franchise agreement to expand into the Middle East. The Jacksonville-based dining and entertainment company announced Monday that it had signed an agreement with Al Sedriyah, a restaurant company based in Qatar. More at the Florida Times-Union.
Study: Nearly 60 Everglades rare plants are endangered
Of more than 760 plants in Everglades National Park, an exhaustive new 10-year study identifies nearly 60 that are critically imperiled. Poaching remains the biggest threat to most plants, particularly rare orchids and ferns that top the list of species presumed extinct. More at the Miami Herald.
Law schools are in a death spiral
No law school has figured out how to handle the new normal of legal education: the lowest number of applicants in four decades; fewer legal jobs for graduates, and, according to Moody’s, “no relief in sight.” More at the Washington Post.
