TissueTech - Miami-Dade Business Profile

To heal the eye of a teenager who was nearly blinded in a fireworks accident in 2011, doctors placed a bandage made from preserved human amniotic membrane over his cornea. Eventually, the teenager regained full sight. The bandage was made by a subsidiary of Doral-based TissueTech. The company, founded in 2001, makes medical products from amniotic membrane and umbilical cord-based tissue. TissueTech therapies have been used to treat diseases and inflammations of the eye surface, musculoskeletal injuries and other wounds. In April, it introduced an eyelid, eyelash and facial cleanser for patients with less-serious eye conditions. This fall, the company received a $10-million investment from Ballast Point Ventures and River Cities Capital Funds.
