The company will ship nearly finished cars from a plant in China to a final assembly plant in Benecia, Calif. It is taking orders on its website but hasn't delivered any cars yet.

• Notable: The publicly traded company has been selling the electric-powered Tesla Roadster for three years. It reportedly stopped taking orders in August. It is currently taking orders for a four-door sedan model and sells electric powertrain components to other carmakers, including Toyota and Daimler.

• Notable: The Wheego LiFe joins the ranks of all-electric cars. The two-seater Wheego is made mostly in China and has a range of around 100 miles.

• Notable: Founded in 2007, Fisker makes its hybrid Karma vehicles in Finland at Valmet Automotive. It delivered its first
car in July.

• Notable: Koenigsegg, which sold its first car in 2002, sells its mid-engine CCX model in the U.S. The car has an 806-horsepower engine with a top speed of more than 245 mph.

• Notable: The company — reportedly backed by investment firm Kleiner Perkins, Google Ventures and billionaire T. Boone Pickens — had to backtrack after the U.S. Department of Energy refused to loan it $320 million for its "environmentally friendly" vehicle. The company adopted a new name last year, Next Autoworks, and hired a new CEO.
