Florida Innovation: 'We Need to Be Proactive, Not Reactive'

Florida's top leaders met recently at the "Imagining an Innovative Economy" summit in Orlando to examine current strategy and brand aspirations around innovation. For the first time, leaders from the state’s four big life-science firms met together on stage. Also, Rollins College President Lewis M. Duncan gave a rousing talk on ideas to stimulate the intellectual capital of young Floridians.

"We all know people can be inventive but that doesn’t mean it's commercializable," said Dr. Richard Houghten, President of Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies. Matty Mathieson of SRI International, Dr. Harry Orf of Scripps Florida and Dr. John C. Reed of Burnham Institute for Medical Research joined him.




"As long as you attract the brightest, most creative young people and stimulate them to ideas and discovery, [Microsoft] is going to hire them," said Rollins College President Lewis M. Duncan. "We need to make sure we are proactive, not reactive."
