BREVARD COUNTY — Direct Air, based in Myrtle Beach, S.C., expects to begin flying later this year between Melbourne International Airport and Dulles International near Washington, D.C., later adding service to Lansing, Mich., and Niagara Falls, N.Y.

» Bisk Education, an online education company, has donated $5 million to the Florida Institute of Technology’s College of Business. The school will be renamed after Nathan Bisk, a Tampa attorney and CPA who is founder, chairman and CEO of the company.

FLAGLER COUNTY — The county is considering establishing an on-site health clinic for its 689 employees and their dependents, which would save about $2.4 million in insurance costs in the first three years.

ORLANDO/ORANGE COUNTY — With 75% of the contracts awarded for the events center that will replace the Amway Arena downtown, the city is on track to have 35% participation by minority- and women-owned companies, the largest of any public project in the state. The total is $79 million — $64 million for minority-owned and $15 million for women-owned companies.

» New York developer Show-Lain Cheng is developing 20 acres near SeaWorld into Zena, a $500-million resort with 1,400 timeshare units and a Buddhist Zen-like theme.

» Orlando International Airport has become one of 20 locations nationwide in the Trusted Traveler Program, a pilot by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that uses a biometric scanner to process U.S. citizens returning from international travel. Participants pay $100 to use the program for five years.

» Orlando has passed a third review stage and is one of 27 U.S. cities still in the running to become a host venue for FIFA World Cup soccer in 2018 or 2022. The league will announce its selection in December 2010.

» Biometric technology company BioTraits has signed on with Panasonic to distribute security products.

SEMINOLE COUNTY — ABB, a North Carolina company that makes power transmission and distribution products, is moving 100 to 160 production jobs from Lake Mary to Mexico. Some administrative departments will stay in central Florida.

VOLUSIA COUNTY — Daytona State College and its foundation have partnered with the Daytona Beach International Festival to create the Volusia Performing Arts Consortium. The group’s first event is Halifax Uncorked! Food, Wine, Barley, Jazz Festival on Nov. 21. The group will host the Daytona Beach International Festival featuring the London Symphony Orchestra in April and May 2010.

» Halifax Health Medical Center, which opened a $200-million expansion in July, is laying off workers and trimming salaries to reduce its payroll by $15.6 million. The hospital says no nurses will lose their jobs.

» Southeast Fabricators is moving its manufacturing operations to DeBary from Lake County, bringing with it 250 jobs.
