For Orlando Solar Bears forward Ian Slater, the day begins before the sun rises.

By 7 a.m., he’s already gotten out of bed and driven to the rink. He laces his skates, makes sure his stick is taped and takes to the ice an hour later.

But, this is not game day — it’s the middle of the summer. And the skaters surrounding him are not his teammates, but kids.

Since the beginning of July, the Florida native has run daily hockey camps at the Daytona Ice Arena — five days per week, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“You can’t not do anything,” Slater said of the lengthy East Coast Hockey League offseason.
