For some Appaloosa breeders part of the appeal of the horse is the multitude of patterns and colors of their coats and the seeming randomness of those patterns.

“It's so cool to wait in the barn for them to foal. I can't wait to see what we get. I have only had one foal look like either of their parents in all the time we've been breeding,” said Debbie Putnam of Nan's Farms in Ocala.
