Miami Dade College to open entrepreneurship center

To prepare its students for success in the entrepreneurial economy, Miami Dade College plans to open a new entrepreneurship center in September. The Idea Center @ MDC will be headed by entrepreneur Leandro Finol and will serve as Miami Dade College’s hub for entrepreneurship. The Center will serve all 165,000 students at the college. It will include a venture incubator, called CREATE, with programming and resources to help grow entrepreneurial ideas and ventures of students. More from the Miami Herald.

Florida citrus industry calls for help from new Marvel superhero

Captain Citrus
Say goodbye to cute, rotund "Captain Citrus." According to David Steele, spokesman for the Florida Department of Citrus, it's time for a new "buff" version of the Captain. The Deprtment of Citrus has partnered with Marvel to create a new superhero and orange juice salesman. The new Captain Citrus will appear this fall in a custom Marvel comic with the Avengers. Florida gets bonus for food stamp program

For the seventh year in a row, Florida is getting a bonus from the federal government for how it runs its food stamp program. The Department of Children and Families announced that the federal government has awarded the state $7 million. DCF said that Florida’s error rate of 0.81 percent was the second lowest in the nation. Orange County Convention Center gets $187M facelift

The work is part of a five-year, $187 million renovation of the center, which has 2.1 million square feet of exhibit space. It's the facility's biggest rehab in its 30-year history, and it includes upgrades to everything from signs to roofing to cooling units. More from the Orlando Sentinel.


IKEA hikes minimum wage to $10.76

IKEA is raising its minimum hourly wage to $10.76 from $9.17 for U.S. store employees. The new minimum is above Florida's basic wage, which rose to $7.93 on Jan. 1. There are 700 hourly store employees in South Florida. The increase, which reflects the increased cost of living, affects about half its U.S. employees, IKEA said. Flying this summer? Expect higher fees

Come July 21, passenger security fees will be going up at U.S. airports. The increase in the fee, which helps fund airport security efforts by the Transportation Security Administration, comes courtesy of the bipartisan budget deal passed by lawmakers last December. More from CNN.
