Who Said That?

"It's important for our residents and members of the community to be able to track down people who are shooting."

-- Darcy Branch, executive director of the Bradenton Housing Authority

A federal grant may pay for a gunshot detection system that Bradenton Police want to monitor a four-square-mile area of their city responsible for 80 percent of its violent crime.

Police Chief Michael Radzilowski wants to arm his officers with the “ShotSpotter Flex Gunfire Location, Alert and Analysis Service.”

It consists of sound sensors mounted throughout a portion of the city, coupled with an off-site 24/7 monitoring service, whose technicians immediately notify police when their sensors detect gunfire.

When the system hears a shot, the officers receive a near-instant alert in their patrol cars through their onboard computers.
