The current account is the country's broadest measure of trade, covering not only goods and services but also investment flows. A smaller trade deficit usually means that U.S. companies are producing more to meet domestic and overseas demand. More at the Miami Herald.
Family-friend practices may burden childless workers
As businesses make more effort to accommodate working parents, the resentment from non-parents is mounting. Early results of a new study of 25,000 workers shows two-thirds of non-parents feel they carry an undue burden at the office and are expected to work longer hours than those with children. Hertz Corp. is on track with its corporate relocation to southwest Florida, even as it prepares to spin off a part of its operations. Hertz currently is based in temporary headquarters in North Naples pending the construction of its $70 million campus in Estero. More at the Tampa Bay Business Journal and the AP.
Some Florida gas stations running on fumes
Family and friends arriving in Florida to escape winter weather may find a few gasoline stations without fuel, particularly in Central Florida near Orlando. Florida is working with 'hand-to-mouth' gasoline inventories right now while the state transitions to "summer blend" gasoline. More at WTSP.
Report: Pay raises for State Attorneys and Public Defenders would save taxpayer money
Florida's Assistant State Attorneys and Assistant Public Defenders are significantly undercompensated, as shown in findings from a Florida TaxWatch research report. The new report analyzes Assistant State Attorney and Assistant Public Defender pay across each of Florida's judicial circuits and finds that starting salaries in Florida fall well below the national average.
