Just south of Paynes Prairie, a modest sign along U.S. 441 marks the entrance to Goodwin Company, where a narrow, pocked road lined with pine scrub and mobile homes opens into a clearing that reveals a sprawling, 30-acre sawmill operation.

That is where George and Carol Goodwin and their 16 employees have been taking longleaf heart pine recovered from river bottoms to make flooring and lumber used in high-end homes, historic renovations and businesses for more than 35 years.
