Who Said That?

When Walter Hiis arrived home in this tiny Nassau County community late last week, he found his wife in tears over the loss of a loved one. Hiis said he nearly broke down when she told him the news.

The couple had just learned that the Fouraker General Store, the only business for miles around, where neighbors and passers-by could get milk, eggs, candy, chips, gas, a hot cup of coffee and a heap of friendly chatter, closed Dec. 16 after nearly 65 years in business.

“It just doesn’t seem right,” said Hiis, 56. “This store is part of our community.”
