Florida’s leading indicator up again
Florida’s leading indicator -- a measurement of economic activity in the state -- went up in August after also rising in July. Six of the 10 components that make up Florida’s leading indicator had a positive contribution in August: unemployment claims, weekly hours in manufacturing, international tourism outlook, national stock prices, interest rate spread and domestic vacation barometer. FPL offering $9 million in solar energy rebates
It's that time of year when Florida Power & Light Co. accepts applications for rebates on solar water heaters and panels, and customers have to act fast before the money runs out. FPL this year is offering about $9 million in solar rebates. It will accept applications starting Oct. 15 at 8:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. [Source: Orlando Sentinel]
Defense companies warn of imminent layoffs due to shutdown
Military contractors are warning government officials that they are only days away from furloughing thousands of workers if the government’s partial shutdown continues. Defense plants are concentrated in a handful of states such as Florida and Texas, where industry layoffs will exacerbate the economic impact already being felt from furloughs of federal workers.
