For more than half a century, Nobel Prize-winning scientist and University of Miami faculty member Andrew Schally has been researching the hormones that stimulate growth in the body’s tissues. Now his work is being used by Miami-based Biscayne Pharmaceuticals, which was founded last year and licensed from UM the rights to Schally’s inventions related to that research. The company, which Schally works with as scientific adviser, is using his discovery to develop possible treatments for cancer and heart disease.

Biscayne Pharma got going after a $1.5-million investment from its co-founders and Miami Beach investment firm Reich Group, whose Managing Partner Samuel Reich joined Biscayne Pharma as CEO. “This is a breakthrough that will really transform the way we treat cancer,” Reich says.
