"We're starting to see a little Snooty sag."

Snooty the manatee, a lumpy charmer for generations of school kids and snowbirds, is finally slowing down and showing his age.

His weight is down to 1,020 pounds, which is good for his health, but he's also lost muscle tone, flexibility and stamina.

Snooty shares the Parker Manatee Aquarium with a pair of juvenile rehabilitation manatees. They help him stay active — until he's had enough, anyway.

“Sometimes, if the younger guys are too much, he'll wander in the back and take a nap,” says Marilyn Margold, director of living collections for the South Florida Museum. “He'll sit on the ledge. Sometimes he'll sleep on his back.”

Snooty, long considered the world's oldest living manatee, turns 65 on Sunday. His annual birthday party, a big event in Bradenton, is Saturday.
