Florida celebrates 500th birthday with financial history website
The interactive, online application at MyFloridaCFO.com/YMM tracks the growth of the state’s transportation, agriculture, tourism and technology. It highlights some of the people and events that drove Florida’s economic growth, from Ponce de Leon first discovering “the land of flowers” in 1519 to Apollo 11 launching from the Kennedy Space Center. Florida supermarket owners charged in $35 million fraud
A South Florida couple whose supermarket chain also offers financial services face fraud and money laundering charges that could land them in prison for decades. The couple operates Diaz Supermarkets, four of which have been closed after authorities raided them last week. More at the AP.

Carnival to reimburse feds for assisting disabled ships
Carnival Corp. has announced plans to reimburse the federal government for assisting the Carnival Triumph and Carnival Splendor, according to Dow Jones Business News. The two ships, the Carnival Splendor in 2010 and the Carnival Triumph in February, required U.S. Coast Guard assistance after fires disabled them off the coast of Mexico. Florida may seem like a long way to travel from Southern Africa in search of building partnerships, but don’t tell that to Namibia Prime Minister Hage Geingob. Geingob was among several politicians and world leaders, including Organization of American States Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, who attended the International Economic Forum of the Americas in Palm Beach last week.
