Port strike averted for 30 days
A longshoremen’s strike set for midnight Saturday, which threatened havoc at 15 ports along the eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast, has been averted for at least a month. The two sides, the International Longshoreman’s Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, say they will continue to negotiate. The strike would have negatively impacted many ports in Florida, including PortMiami, which does close to $20 billion a year in container business. [Source: Miami Herald]

Fewer banks failing as industry strengthens
Banks are ending the year with their best profits since 2006 and fewer failures than at any time since the financial crisis struck in 2008. They're helping support an economy slowed by high unemployment, flat pay, sluggish manufacturing and anxious consumers. As the economy heals from the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, more people and businesses are taking out - and repaying - loans. National homebuilders returning to Southwest Florida
Some of the largest homebuilders in the U.S. are returning to Southwest Florida, in a sign that the housing market is rebounding in an area hit hard by the Great Recession. The builders are viewing a rising demand and a limited inventory of new homes in the region surrounding Sarasota. [Source: Tampa Bay Business Journal]
