One by one, the Palm Tran bus drivers stood at the podium, telling Palm Beach County commissioners they were unable to reconcile tight schedules with full bladders.

Their request was simple: enough time in their routes for the occasional bathroom break in the midst of moving record numbers of riders around the county.

“In the last two and a half years, I have developed some serious health issues,” said Deborah Marinaro, a bus driver with 34 years of experience. “I’ve been ordered by physicians to drink lots of water to treat a urinary tract infection, bladder infection and kidney problems.

“But I can’t accommodate doctor’s orders because it would require me to stop more frequently (for bathroom breaks). And that would affect my operations. I’m not comfortable with running late and people’s life at risk.”
