A tasty report: Red grouper have regrouped
In the late 1990s, many grouper species — including red grouper — were considered overfished. But in the early 2000s, populations surged. A 2005 bloom of red tide again lowered the Gulf’s red grouper population, but in recent years the species has rebounded thanks to catch quotas and protected spawning areas put in place by groups such as NOAA. Next time you drive through downtown Fort Lauderdale, don't be surprised if you see more solar panels on buildings. Three buildings already have solar awnings, thanks to a Community Redevelopment Agency program that offers grants for beautification and other improvements in economically challenged areas. Auto shops cash in on Tropical Storm Isaac
Cars and trucks, buried under water, have become the lasting images from the sustained downpours of Tropical Storm Isaac. Index: Home prices see increase in June
Home prices in South Florida and across the nation increased in June, another indication that the housing market is rebounding from the six-year bust. Prices in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties rose 1.6 percent from May and 4.4 percent from a year ago, figures from the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index show. Jennifer Kercher has been receiving marriage proposals the past few days, many of them in the form of messages on Facebook. That's what happens when a woman wins $100,000 on national television. Kercher, a Lakeland native and Kathleen High School graduate, emerged as the winner Saturday night in the final episode of the competitive TV show "Redneck Island."
