Twenty years ago, there was little demand at most utilities for new electrical engineering grads. Two decades later, a generation of electrical engineers has begun retiring en masse and electrical engineers have become a hot commodity for companies like Power Grid Engineering, which specializes in engineering design and consultation for the power systems industry. To bridge the gap, Andre Uribe, Power Grid’s vice president of business development, says the company has a two-pronged hiring effort, bringing some engineers out of retirement to help train new engineers fresh out of school. “There’s a lack of qualified professionals,” says Uribe, who has hired 14 employees since last year.
