Capital City Bank: Profile of a large company

Corum
Capital City Bank’s 14% turnover rate means the bank is constantly hiring for its 70 locations in Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Bethany Corum says most of the more than 120 annual open positions are for tellers and other entry-level positions. While a college degree is preferred, Corum says “experience can trump education.” Degrees such as accounting and finance stand out, she says, but liberal arts degrees aren’t scorned. More important in hiring is experience in customer service, she says. Most tellers receive a starting wage of about $23,000, with the opportunity for raises in the first year. About 30% of the new hires come through employee referrals. Capital City Bank pays between $250 and $750 to an employee who refers a friend who is hired and stays for 90 days. Corum says she asks job seekers their favorite number to “get a good read on who they are.” She said: “Some people give you a number that is a child’s birthday. So you know family is important to them.”
