There’s one title on a resume that makes recruiter Bill Neese take a closer look: College athlete. Neese, vice president of recruiting for Total Quality Logistics, a freight management company, says the firm’s competitive, sales-oriented atmosphere is the perfect fit for former athletes.

“We are looking for individuals with an incredible work ethic who want to be compensated for results,” Neese says. The company offers uncapped commissions and promotes friendly in-house rivalries to drive sales. Cincinnati-based Total Quality Logistics hired 50 people in Tampa last year and recruits heavily from Florida schools, looking for students with skills in marketing, communications, sales and entrepreneurship.

Alex Critcher, 24, was hired as a logistics account executive last year after attending a recruiting fair for MBA students at the University of Tampa. Critcher, who was not a college athlete, says he likes that the firm rewards hard work financially. “There is a lot of opportunity to slip into management positions at an early age,” Critcher says.
