Pet Food Company Eating Their Words

Art Levy | 10/1/2007

When Miami attorney Catherine J. MacIvor heard about the melamine-tainted pet food scare a few months back, her first thought was of her beloved cats, Mimi and Marlowe. After determining that they were OK, she turned her attention to learning as much as she could about the pet food industry. What she found went beyond melamine and led the partner at Maltzman Foreman to get involved in a class-action suit, accusing many of the nation’s pet food makers and retailers of false advertising.

The suit claims “pet food companies market their products as wholesome, choice cuts of meat, natural and complete and balanced diets even though they are fully aware that this food is largely carbohydrates and sugars combined with toxic preservatives and additives with very little to no meat at all.”

Two Florida pet owners were among the original three plaintiffs, who also included a cat and dog owner from Michigan. Since May, more than 20 other plaintiffs from across the country have joined in. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages.

As for Mimi and Marlowe, they’re eating well these days. Ever since the melamine scare, MacIvor has made all of their food from scratch.
