› Workforce board directs an extra $2.3 million into popular jobs program
As the new management of Workforce Central Florida tries to repair the agency’s damaged reputation, officials are on the lookout for opportunities to highlight those programs that provide direct help to people who are unemployed. Monday, board members voted to channel an extra $2.3 million into a popular program that had become a victim of its own success.

› Governor responds to folk song that laments Citizens insurance changes
South Florida folk singer Kevin Roth busted a protest rhyme on Citizens insurance and Gov. Rick Scott, posting it on youtube Tuesday. The song, called Citi-Sins, takes the state's insurer of last resort to task for rising premiums and shrinking coverage. The governor's office sang a different tune in its response.

› Battle cry to save USF pours out in wake of proposed budget cuts
Phones of lawmakers rang off the hook Tuesday, and emails poured in, loaded with words like vindictive, egregious and unconscionable. University of South Florida president Judy Genshaft took a pre-dawn flight to work the halls of the Capitol. On campus in Tampa, classes were interrupted by calls to action from students and faculty. The battle cry: Don't punish USF.

With a fast-growing medical school on a built-out campus, the university is pursuing state-owned land bordering the Everglades to exchange for the existing county fair grounds; environmentalists question the plan.

› Defense budget cuts should spare Brevard
The Obama administration’s proposed budget released Monday calls for less defense spending, but Brevard companies that depend on military contracts didn’t see massive cuts aimed at them. “We’re still going over the entire defense budget,” said Bryan Gulley, spokesman for U.S. Sen Bill Nelson (D-Orlando). “But, we’ve so far seen no indication there are any huge hits to Brevard.”
