Community Portrait

Ocala & Marion County

More than just gathering data, we're trying to capture elements that make each community distinctive.

Why I Live Here

Frank & Carol Hennessey
During my early retirement years, I became passionate about Arabian horses and decided to buy a farm to breed and raise them. My wife, Carol, and I visited numerous farms in both Florida and California. We picked Ocala/Marion County because it is truly horse country. The settings available are serene and perfect for raising horses.

Carol and I have been welcomed by the community. We are finding it easy to become involved with great causes and truly committed people who are eager to make a difference. I would recommend Ocala to anyone who has a true love for horses.

In late 2006, my previous employer gave me a choice of three markets where I could relocate with my family: Ocala, another market in Florida, and one in South Carolina. Once we visited Ocala, our decision was made. We fell in love with the natural beauty of this region. Ocala has a small-town feel with all the resources and amenities of a larger market. We made a great decision. This community is very welcoming, and there is never a lack of community events to participate in. My family and I regularly hike along the Silver River and train for triathlons by cycling some amazing trails. We stay connected culturally by visiting the Appleton Museum and enjoying the Ocala Symphony.

Last year, two partners and I started a business advisory firm called Root Theory. None of us are natives of Ocala, and we could have started the firm anywhere in the Southeast. We decided very quickly that we all wanted to remain in this wonderful city. Our decision has paid off. We have successfully grown our business, with clients throughout Florida. We plan to expand in North Carolina in the next 12 months and then hope to expand nationally and in the Caribbean. When we do, we will keep Ocala our home.
