The University of Central Florida reports that it was awarded a record $133.3 million in external research funding in 2009-10 — ranking it among the top eight nationwide — and has pumped more than $1 billion into the local economy in the past 11 years through its research. The highlights:

$75.8 million Federal funding, up 27% over the previous year

$28.7 million Funding from federal stimulus dollars

41 Researchers who earned $1 million or more in grants

$21.2 million Funding for the Florida Solar Energy Center
