St. Petersburg — The new $36-million Salvador Dali Museum has opened alongside St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theater near downtown.

The 66,450-sq.-ft. facility, twice as large as the museum’s former home about a mile away, will house more than 2,000 of the Spanish surrealist’s works. Designed by architect Yann Weymouth, the museum was built to withstand a category five hurricane and is topped by an organically shaped glass atrium.
