South Florida home prices closing in on previous peaks

Home prices increased across South Florida in June and are inching ever closer to the peaks achieved before the market meltdown a decade ago. Still, analysts are not forecasting another historic collapse. They say the robust market is due for a dip and predict prices will level out rather than plummet as they did during the housing bust of 2006-2011. [Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel]

Tourism lifts Cuban economy but overall outlook is cloudy

Cuba’s historic cities, vibrant culture and sandy beaches were the star performers of the economy in the first half of the year, pulling in 23.2 percent more visitors than the first six months of 2016. Politics prop up greyhound racing in Florida

The state’s 12 dog tracks took in $240 million in bets during the year that ended in June 2016, half the amount wagered a decade before. The state says it now spends more money regulating the greyhound industry than it receives in tax revenue from the races. [Source: Florida Times-Union]

Florida scientists developing disease-resistant seedless watermelon

Scientists at the University of Florida (UF) seem to have found a way to increase the disease resistance of seedless watermelons while still retaining the fruit’s flavor. Pete Antonacci confirmed as Enterprise Florida CEO

A "nationwide search for Pete Antonacci" came to a quick conclusion Monday as Enterprise Florida's board of directors voted unanimously to make him the job-recruitment agency's new president and chief executive officer. Antonacci, Enterprise Florida's fifth CEO in less than three years, will start work Aug. 2 at a salary of $165,000 a year. Full story here. Also read more at the Times/Herald and WJXT.
