Are online courses turning Florida's schools into diploma mills?

After the last bell has sounded, a group of students voluntarily packs the computer lab in the media center at Paul R. Smith Middle School in Holiday Wednesday to participate in an after-school algebra tutorial to make sure they're prepared for the state's end-of-course exam. The test counts as 30 percent of a student's grade, and it's also a state graduation requirement.

Are online courses turning Florida's schools into diploma mills?

Nearly a decade ago, state officials decreed that, starting in 2009, graduation data would factor into the letter grades assigned to individual public schools. The stakes were high and one solution with the anodyne name of "online credit recovery" promised a radical turnaround in student performance. But is it selling students short? [Source: Slate]
