Florida death penalty cases allowed to proceed

Prosecutors can seek the death penalty in ongoing cases despite constitutional issues with the Florida's death penalty law, the state Supreme Court ruled Monday. The ruling addresses questions that had prosecutors in limbo after the state Supreme Court ruled last October that the state's new death penalty law was unconstitutional. The court concluded: Respondent's Motion for Clarification is hereby denied as moot. See Evans v. State, No. SC16-1946, Rosario v. State, No. SC16-2133. Also read more at the AP and Fox35.

Florida is the deadliest place to walk in America

Dangerous By Design

A newly released study found that Florida is the deadliest place to walk in America, and Jacksonville is among the leading cities for pedestrian deaths. Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition concluded the deaths were in part due to unsafe roads and a lack of sidewalks and crosswalks. Annual Florida manatee count breaks record for third year in a row

For the third year in a row, the annual attempt to count the manatees swimming in Florida's waterways has broken the previous year's record. Scientists reported finding 6,620 manatees this year, up from the 6,250 they counted last year and the 6,063 the year before. More from the Tampa Bay Times and the Orlando Sentinel.

FPL accelerates plans to add solar power

Florida’s largest electric utility intends to double its solar-energy plans for the coming year, leading solar proponents to praise the announcement — and say they would like to see more. Florida gas prices steady, but spring increase still expected

Gas prices showed little movement in the past week, but experts are still expecting a spring run-up. The statewide average on Monday was $2.281, up slightly from $2.277 a week ago. More from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and the Tampa Bay Times.
