Gov. Scott awards $25 million in state funds for Zika research and vaccine development

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is awarding 34 grants to research institutions in Florida for Zika virus research and vaccine development last fall. Grant funding will be used to help develop a vaccine to prevent infection, understand and mitigate long-term impacts of Zika virus on children and adults and develop cost-effective Zika testing methods.The Florida Department of Health (DOH) oversaw the grant process, which was awarded through a competitive process based on recommendations by the Biomedical Research Advisory Council. In Florida, fighting to fix children's hearts

The Sunshine State is a haven for children's hospitals. With at least 10 scattered from Jacksonville to Miami, they rival the number of the state's big-name theme parks. Once sheltered from competitive pressures by philanthropic support and reliable Medicaid coverage, they're no longer beyond the reach of market forces buffeting other health care institutions. Gulf shrimp supply dropping

Scientists say the amount of shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico is going down. Shrimpers caught more than 3 million pounds less this past December, than in Decembers past. Florida shrimpers landed more than 19 million pounds from the Gulf and Atlantic last year, making up about 15% of the domestic total. More from WZVN.

Miami Marine Stadium, finally destined for a multi-million-dollar rebirth, might benefit from foreign investment funds.
