A small village started emerging this week in the parking lot of Orlando's convention center in advance of what is expected to be the center's hallmark event this year — the International Builders' Show.

› FPL seeks to recoup Hurricane Matthew costs
Florida Power & Light is seeking approval to collect $318.5 million from customers to recoup costs from Hurricane Matthew and to replenish a storm reserve, according to documents filed at the state Public Service Commission.

› Gas prices rise to $2.50 range in South Florida
It's a happy new year at the gas pumps alright — if you make money off the petroleum industry. This is the most expensive start, gas wise, to a new year since 2014, travel club AAA said Tuesday.

› New bat house under construction at University of Florida
The University of Florida has begun building a third home for its nocturnal friends across from Lake Alice. The site, a popular Gainesville attraction, is home to about 250,000 bats and brings crowds in the evenings to see bats hit the town for the night in search of food.
