Updates on Hurricane Matthew: Gov. Scott wants Floridians to prepare in case of direct hit

Update on Hurricane Matthew: A tropical storm watch has been issued for the area from the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys to Deerfield Beach in Palm Beach County and includes Lake Okeechobee. A hurricane watch has been issued for the area from Deerfield Beach to the Brevard-Volusia county line. Gov. Rick Scott says "everyone in our state must prepare today for a direct hit." Hurricane Matthew is a category 4 storm that already blasted through Haiti en route to the Bahamas and Florida's east coast. See the Governor's statement here. The Governor has also issued a lengthy list of preparedness efforts, from military support to FDOT, utilities, Florida Petroleum Council, and more.

Halloween spending expected to break records in Florida

Consumer spending on Halloween is expected to set an all-time high with the average person spending almost $83 on Halloween this year, up from $74 in 2015. Floridans will be spending extra money on a range of items from decorations to pet costumes. Total spending nationally on Halloween is expected to reach $8.4 billion up from $6.9 billion last year. "We fully expect Florida’s Halloween sales to meet or exceed the national numbers thanks to sustained positive economic indicators and a healthy state economy," said Florida Retail Federation President and CEO Randy Miller.
