On December 21, 2015, Elon Musk’s SpaceX became the first company to successfully launch a rocket into orbit and then fly it safely back to Earth. The historic event, which is seen as a key step toward making space travel commercially viable, took place just 10 minutes after SpaceX’s Falcon rocket took off from Cape Canaveral with a load of small satellites for a commercial customer.



BREVARD COUNTY Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer has opened a 236,000-sq.-ft. assembly facility in Melbourne for production of its Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 executive jet aircraft, and is constructing the new Embraer Aero Seating Technologies facility in Titusville. The firm plans to add 600 jobs over the next four years.

BREVARD COUNTY Lockheed Martin will add 130 workers to support its role in the U.S. Navy’s Trident II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missile program in Cape Canaveral and create 300 additional jobs at its Astrotech Space Operations site in Titusville.

CAPE CANAVERAL Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has opened its Commercial Crew & Cargo Processing facility at Kennedy Space Center with the expectation of adding 550 jobs over the next year.

MELBOURNE Defense contractor Northrop Grumman expects to grow its campus at Melbourne International Airport by more than 700,000 square feet and 1,900 new employees as the result of a multibillion-dollar contract with the U.S. Air Force to develop long-range bombers.

MELBOURNE Following its acquisition of defense-industry competitor Exelis in 2015, Harris Corp. announced plans to maintain its corporate headquarters and two business units in Brevard County. Based in Florida since 1978, Harris has some 6,000 employees, more than half of them engineers and scientists.

VIERA Satcom Direct, a manufacturer of satellite voice and broadband services for flight decks and cabin communications, opened its new 42,000-sq.-ft. world headquarters building in October 2015.

It is rocket science In fall 2015, founder Jeff Bezos announced that Blue Origin, the company he started 15 years ago with dreams of opening space flight to all, will build reusable rockets in Brevard County, launch them from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and create 330 jobs.
