36,000 private-sector jobs were created in Florida during January

Florida businesses created 36,000 private-sector jobs in January, continuing Florida’s impressive job-creation streak. Florida's unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been in 8 years at 5%. Gov. Scott made the announcement as he embarked on a “Million, Billion Jobs Victory Tour” at Orion Technologies in Orlando. Cigar City Brewing selling controlling interest to Boston's Fireman Capital Partners

Cigar City Brewing, one of Tampa Bay's leading and independent brands in craft brewing, has agreed to sell controlling interest to Boston-based private equity firm Fireman Capital Partners. Fireman Capital already owns five craft breweries that make up United Craft Brews LLC., a holding company and special purpose fund set up sfor craft brewery acquisitions. Florida judge ends surprise-conviction practice

Chief Judge Frederick Lauten of Florida's Ninth Judicial Circuit Court is ending the practice of applying a conviction onto misdemeanor suspects who elected to pay a fine rather than appear in court.. "We don't want to trick someone into entering a plea for a crime." More from the AP.

Running for pie, or Pi

florida Florida Polytechnic University students organized and hosted the second annual Florida Poly Pi Run, which featured a 3.14-mile course around the campus. The Pi Run is held in honor of the mathematical constant pi (3.14), and corresponds with National Pi Day on March 14, or 3-14. Now in its second year, the annual fundraiser was created by Florida Poly’s student body to help fund student scholarships.
