Unemployment applications plummet to 42-year low

The number of people seeking U.S. unemployment aid plunged last week to the lowest level in nearly 42 years, evidence that employers are holding onto their staffs and likely hiring at a steady pace. Yet the drop also reflects seasonal volatility in the data. More at the AP.

Hispanics in Florida more financially secure

It's been a good year for hispanics overall in the Sunshine State, with 65 percent of them feeling more financially secure, indicates the study from Florida Atlantic University's Business and Economics Polling Initiative in the College of Business. Florida’s war on invasive species drags on

In the war with invasive species, Florida is winning some skirmishes but far from vanquishing its formidable enemies. On Wednesday, researchers and government agencies gathered in Davie for an annual summit to talk about the latest findings on exotic threats to Florida. More at the Miami Herald.

Wal-Mart, others want out of Florida energy-efficiency program

Wal-Mart and a group representing other large users of electricity say they can do a better job of saving energy if state regulators would let them opt out of a nearly 35-year-old conservation program. More at the Orlando Sentinel.

Higher minimum-wage proposals gain ground on both coasts

The push for a higher minimum wage gained momentum on both sides of the country, with New York embracing an eventual $15 an hour for the state's 200,000 fast-food workers and the huge University of California system announcing the same raise for its employees. More at the AP.
