Florida unemployment rate unchanged at 5.7 percent
Florida's unemployment rate stood at 5.7 percent in January, unchanged from the prior month, according to figures released Tuesday morning. The state added 13,900 jobs over the month and is now up nearly 275,000 jobs from January of 2014. More at the Tampa Bay Times and the AP.
BP says Gulf Of Mexico recovering from 2010 oil spill
Federal scientists are disputing statements by BP PLC that U.S. Gulf Coast ecosystems are recovering well from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Government officials and environmental groups said late Monday that the effects of the multimillion-barrel oil spill are likely to last “for generations,” according to media reports. Orlando ranks No. 9 for working women
Orlando ranks No. 9 in the U.S. among large cities for women in the workforce, according to personal finance website Nerdwallet. The website looked at 2013 data for median pay for women compared to men, and at women’s participation in the workforce. More at the Orlando Sentinel.
Jones Edmunds secures $20M contract renewal from NASA
NASA has re-upped its contract with Gainesville-based civil engineering firm Jones Edmunds for work primarily on the space agency’s Space Launch System manned deep-space program. More at the Gainesville Sun.
Florida's gas, cell phone taxes among highest in nation
Florida has some of the highest gasoline and cell phone taxes in the nation, according to a new analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation. Only Washington, Nebraska and New York have a higher average state and local tax rate on cell phones than Florida's 16.55 percent as of July 2014. More at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
