2014 financial year in review
Since the beginning of the calendar year, many economic trends have taken place. Long-term interest rates came down, but the US dollar strengthened as investors saw the United States as the best place to put their money. The former head of the state's highway safety agency is being appointed to lead Florida's prison system. Gov. Rick Scott announced Tuesday that Julie Jones will become secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections on Jan. 5. More at the AP.
Florida has a million fewer mortgages
Florida now has more than a million fewer mortgages than seven years ago, as foreclosures have forced property owners out of the market, according to a study released Wednesday. More at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
As gas prices continue to drop, drivers more likely to take a trip
Florida mirrors the nationwide average of $2.70, which is 10 cents lower than last week’s national average. There are some states, including South Carolina, that could see prices drop to $2 by the end of the year. More at the Miami Herald.
