Dr. Kent Fuchs, provost of Cornell University, was named the 12th president of the University of Florida by the UF Board of Trustees. He will assume the position Jan. 1, 2015. Dr. Fuchs (pronounced "fox") was called "a distinguished academic who has very effectively served as provost and chief operating officer of an institution ranked 15th of all universities in the nation," by Steven Scott, Chair, UF Board of Trustees. In commemoration of the centennial of its opening in 1914, Kiss of the Oceans will tell the fascinating story of the construction of the Panama Canal, one of the world’s great technological achievements. Kiss of the Oceans has been organized by the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. The fall exhibition runs from Oct. 14, 2014 to Jan4, 2015. |
Retail sales slump in nearly every category
Retail sales dipped 0.3 percent in September, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday, a sign that consumers remain cautious about opening their wallets despite improving economic conditions. More at the Washington Post, the AP, and Reuters.

Cheaper Prepaid college plans go on sale
Florida Prepaid College plans go on sale again Wednesday, and this time it may really seem like a sale. After six years of rapidly increasing prices which made Prepaid unaffordable for most families, this year's prices are the lowest since 2007. More at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Florida tops in the U.S. for cash sales of homes in July
Florida had the largest share of cash sales of any state in July, with 49.7 percent, a new report from CoreLogic shows. For the United States as a whole, cash sales made up 32.9 percent of total home sales in July. More at the Orlando Business Journal.
Sunshine State Survey Floridians want stricter gun laws. They don't want to pay sales tax on Internet purchases. And they don't want additional help going to immigrants who aren't in the country legally.
