Jobless rate falls to 6-year low
A surprisingly powerful surge in hiring pushed unemployment to a six-year low of 5.9 percent in September as the U.S. labor market showed renewed vigor. The 248,000 gain in payrolls last month followed a 180,000 increase in August that was bigger than previously estimated. More at the AP and Bloomberg.

As election day nears in Florida, the talk turns to absentee ballot fraud
Absentee ballot fraud has plagued Florida elections for years. In 1998, Florida Department of Law Enforcement chronicled multiple abuses starting as far back as 1984. More at the Florida Watchdog.
Feds: Florida college chain FastTrain scammed taxpayers
At its peak, Miami-based FastTrain College had grown to seven Florida campuses. It had ties to a sitting U.S. congressman. It was raking in millions of dollars. And it was all a criminal conspiracy, according to a federal indictment released Thursday. More at the Miami Herald.
