In Florida, service workers come from elsewhere

Out-of-state soldiers at Florida military bases tend to come from California, Virginia and Texas, while Central America is one of the top sources of new construction workers in Florida. New data released by the U.S. Census Bureau this month shows where workers came from before moving to Florida in 2012. More at the AP.

Longtime Fort Myers resident Thomas Edison is on the list of the six Florida inventors who were inducted Wednesday evening into the new Florida Inventors Hall of Fame, and Robert "Gatorade" Cade, too. But so is John Gorrie.

Gorrie is the Apalachicola doctor who's the father of refrigeration and air conditioning.

U.S. retail sales increase broadly in August

The Commerce Department said on Friday retail sales increased 0.6 percent last month as Americans bought automobiles and a range of other goods after an upwardly revised 0.3 percent gain in July. More at Reuters.


Florida Documentary Film Festival has moviegoers seeing stars

The confluence of music and documentaries is part of the allure of the returning festival of 30 full-length and short films, which begins Thursday night and continues Friday and Saturday at Boca Raton's Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park. More at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.


Olive Garden investor: Back off on the breadsticks

Olive Garden is hurting itself by piling on too many breadsticks, according to an investor that's disputing how the restaurant chain is run. In a nearly 300-page critique, the hedge fund Starboard Value says Olive Garden restaurants lack training and discipline. More at the AP.

All Aboard Florida opponents ramp up video campaign

The Guardians of Martin County, a grassroots organization that is opposing the All Aboard Florida express passenger rail service, launched the first video in a six part series this week featuring Harry Bruce, former CEO and president of Illinois Central Railroad. More at the Palm Beach Post.
