Hispanics helped fuel much of Florida’s population growth over the past decade.
Recent reports from the Pew Research Center on Hispanic and foreign-born population trends documented how the U. S.-born Latino population is now growing faster than the immigrant Hispanic population. In 2012, 49.8% of Hispanic adults were born overseas, down from 55.7% in 2007.
Among other national trends:
- Hispanic household size is shrinking.
- The percentage of Hispanics who have never married or who are currently unmarried has risen.
- More than a quarter of all Hispanics speak English at home exclusively. More than half of those who speak another language at home report speaking English very well; a third say they don’t speak English very well.
The South Rises — Again
From 2010-13, the South accounted for slightly more than half of all population growth in the U.S. Among Southern states, Florida accounted for 20.9% of the South’s net population growth during that period, trailing only Texas, which accounted for 34.1%.

Some 19.5% of Floridians are foreign-born. Just over 23% are Hispanic. The state’s Hispanic population is not spread evenly throughout the state. Around 40% of the Hispanic population is concentrated in three counties: Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.
Between 2000 and 2012, the percentage of foreignborn residents of Florida grew by 41%. In 2000, there were 2. 66 million foreign-born Floridians; that number rose to 3.76 million in 2012.
In Florida ...
Florida grew by some 2. 81 million residents between 2000-10. That was driven largely by growth in the state’s Hispanic population, however, which accounted for 54.7% of the state’s overall population growth. Overall, growth in the non-white population accounted for nearly 85% of Florida’s population growth in that decade.

Florida, with 3.76 million foreign-born residents, has the fourth-largest foreignborn population, after California (10.2 million); New York (4.44 million) and Texas (4.22 million).
