Florida's quote of the day
"Teachers are so burnt out and so frustrated they don't want to go that extra mile anymore."
A firestorm among teachers has forced the Broward school district to back off a proposal that would have cut 3,400 veteran educators out of their state-promised pay hikes.
While teachers with less than 20 years experience would receive an average five percent increase, the district Wednesday proposed those with 20 or 21 years get a flat $2,200 raise this year. But the 2,800 teachers with 22-plus years would only receive a $500 boost, or a less than one percent increase.
Gov. Rick Scott and the Legislature in April earmarked $480 million to give raises to all educators but left it up to the districts and its unions to divide it.
