Who Said That?

Florida's quote of the day

| 3/19/2013

"I am a 92-year-old with a wife and a brain. I am able to drive, but don't venture too far."

-- Irvin Suisman of Boynton Beach

Anita Edgell wants to win another $50 Visa gift card.

"I give them to my grandchildren," Edgell says, as black bars and sevens pop up on her screen at Play It Again senior arcade in Davie. "They make great presents."

Like many South Florida seniors, Edgell likes to pass a couple of hours every now and then at an arcade. She says playing the low-stakes games, which charge as little 8 cents per bet, costs her less than what she'd spend at a casino.

"This is my time off," says Edgell, 70. "I don't smoke. I don't drink. But I can come here and see friends."

Edgell and thousands of other South Florida seniors may soon need to find another way to socialize. A bill is cruising through the Florida Legislature to eliminate the two largest forms of low-stakes gambling: Internet cafes and senior arcades.
